An Introduction to Fishways

This project, completed with four civil engineering students under a professional engineer's supervision, aimed to support hydrotechnical engineering and environmental conservation. We focused on ensuring healthy aquatic conditions for effective fishway design.

Our project explored fishways and their role in preserving aquatic ecosystems.

  • Purpose & History: Traced the evolution of fishways and their importance in sustaining fish populations.

  • Types & Hydraulics: Analyzed designs like vertical slot, Denil, and weir fishways, focusing on hydraulic performance and species-specific needs.

  • Design Considerations: Emphasized material choice, waterway connectivity, and environmental integration.

  • Implementation & Case Studies: Reviewed real-world examples, including the Altrude Creek and Hunt Dam fishways.

  • Environmental & Economic Impact: Highlighted ecological benefits, design effectiveness, and long-term value despite high costs.

  • Case Study: Examined the Vianney Legendre Fishway in Quebec as a practical application of best practices.
