Rehabilitation/Replacement Plan for McDonald's Road Bridge
Jan 2024 - May 2024
-

The McDonald's Road Bridge is a small but essential structure that serves as the sole access point for three residential homes in a rural area. It spans a waterway, requiring careful consideration of hydrotechnical and structural factors to ensure its functionality and resilience. The bridge is integral to the daily lives of the residents, providing access for vehicles, deliveries, and emergency services.
As a team of five senior civil engineering students, we partnered with Jewer Bailey Consultants (JBC) and the Town of Logy Bay to assess and propose solutions for the aging McDonald's Road Bridge, which provides critical access to three homes.
Scope of Work
Condition Assessment: Analyzed structural reports and performed hydrotechnical and hydrological calculations to assess flood resilience and water flow capacity.
Repair Feasibility: Evaluated phased repair strategies for damaged sections, developed a cost estimate and schedule using MS Project.
Replacement Feasibility: Explored design alternatives for a new bridge at different alignments, supported by hydrological data, temporary access planning, and cost-schedule analysis.
Design & Modeling: Created a structural analysis of the proposed replacement using S-Frame.
Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinated regularly with JBC, Logy Bay Town Hall, and local residents to incorporate feedback and ensure alignment with community needs.
Outcome:
Delivered a final report recommending the replacement of the bridge with a new design that meets current standards and codes. Recommendation included changes to the bridge height and span to accommodate traffic and flood flows, incorporating climate changes.
