Vertical Curve Design and Flexible Pavement Analysis for Highway

As part of my Highway engineering coursework, I completed a detailed roadway layout and flexible pavement design project.

The scope of work included the following tasks:
  • Vertical Curve Design

    • Redrew the roadway layout, identifying PVC, PVI, and PVT stationing and elevations.

    • Developed the parabolic equation for the curve and calculated the lowest point.

    • Determined the minimum curve length for stopping sight distances at 20, 35, and 55 mi/hr and redesigned as needed.

  • Bridge Clearance Design

    • Determined clearance for a 100.26-foot bridge over the curved road and schematically illustrated the section per AASHTO guidelines.

  • Flexible Pavement Design

    • Designed pavements for a four-lane highway and a two-lane rural road, considering AADT, axle loads, material properties, and drainage conditions.

    • Calculated surface, base, and subbase thicknesses and repeated the design for varying CBR values.

  • Drawings

    • Made scaled layouts of the vertical curve, bridge, and pavement cross-sections.

This project enhanced my skills in roadway and pavement design, ensuring precision and compliance with AASHTO standards.
